SON: LYRIC BOOK
CONTRARY TO THE OPINIONS OF SOME REVIEWERS, THIS ALBUM IS NOT AN AUTOBIOGRPHICAL UPDATE.
IT IS NOT LITERAL, NOT LINEAR, NOT PERSONAL OR ASTRINGENTLY PUNCTILIAR. THIS IS A BLUES
ALBUM. A STORYLINE IS WOVEN THROUGH THE SONGS. SURE THESE SONGS ARE ABOUT MY LIFE, JUST LIKE
THEY'RE ABOUT YOUR LIFE.
I WROTE THESE SONGS TO EXPRESS THE PASSING FEELINGS I HAVE HAD ABOUT EMOTIONS LIKE LONELINESS,
DESPAIR, ROMANTIC REJECTION.
IF YOU FIND YOURSELF UNABLE TO IDENTIFY WITH THESE SONGS, THEN CONGRATULATIONS ... YOU'VE
LED A VERY PRIVILAGED EXISTENCE.
All of us are pilgrims, finding our way through life. We're looking for a road to take.
We've experienced loneliness, despair, confusions, sadness, anger, embarrassment, hunger,
thirst, exhaustion and a need to be loved. This album is the story of conversion: from doubt
to faith, from sin to salvation. This is the story of one man, but it is also the story of all of us.
I am a pilgrim, too. I'm following the light. I'm walking on the narrow road. I'm listening to
His voice. I'm fighting the good fight. I am running the race. These songs are about me. But
they're about you, too. I became a Christian when I was five. And I haven't quit yet. I started writing
songs when I was nine. The songs on this album were written between 1960 and 1977. My first seven albums
were very rhetorical and intentionally didactic. These next seven albums are meant to be more personal.
This next series of albums was never made, except for the first three (?), two of which were never released. The airplane accident
changed a lot of things in Larry's life. - Tim

These albums are phase two of my music. I don't just record my latest ten songs and stick them
on an album to have something out for Christmas. I work on each of my albums for years and years
before I even record them. (And it sometimes takes several more years to get them released, doesn't it?)
I'm not trying to write commercial albums and have radio airplay and large sales and end up on anyone's
bestseller lists or national radio charts. I'm and artist, not an entertainer. I write about ideas,
about concepts. My albums are about things that are real. The past, the present, the future. The Seven Days
Seven Days - Seven Albums
On the First Day, God said, "Let There Be Light." And there WAS Light! If you ever find a copy of my first
album on Capitol Records (WE NEED A WHOLE LOT MORE OF JESUS AND A LOT LESS ROCK AND ROLL - recorded 1967)
you will notice a light switch in the lower right hand corner. You'll also see a drawing of Jesus standing in the
middle of the band. Let there be light. Jesus IS the light.
All the albums are conceptual extensions of the social and spiritual aspects of the seven days of Creation.
And on the Sixth Day, God created Man. And God walked in the Garden with him. If, in the beginning was the Word,
and that truly The Word was Jesus Himself, then it was possibly Jesus who walked in the Garden with Adam.
This is one of the mysteries I won't understand until I ask Jesus, face to face. Jesus, the Lion of Judah.
(Called "Aslan" by C.S. Lewis.) Man and God were at one with each other until sin divided them. That's why
the Lion is on the front cover of SO LONG AGO THE GARDEN. And Jesus was called the Second Adam. The
back cover represents the snake and the apple, Satan and temptation.
And on the Seventh Day, God rested. A day is as a thousand years to God, and a thousand years is as a day.
There will someday be a thousand years of peace on earth. And a new Jerusalem shall be established. IN ANOTHER
LAND is about the future. On the front cover you'll see the New Jerusalem sitting in the midst of the desert.
On anyone's calendar, the eighth day of the week is really the first day of the second week.
So, my eighth album is a repeat of the first. Let There Be Light. But not merely the sun up in the sky. Let there
be a light inside of us. A SON in our hearts. It has been said by Solomon that there is "nothing new under the sun."
But behold, in Christ Jesus, all things become new. The old man dies and we become a new child in Christ. Born Again.
We become something new under the Son.
The front cover of SOMETHING NEW UNDER THE SON has no light switch because this is the inner light.
You can see the circle of a radiant glow on the cover. And on the back cover you see me looking at a bridge.
A bridge is many things. It takes us from one place to another. It carries us safely across a chasm of death.
Christ is also the bridge. The Bridge from man to God that lets us cross from Hell to Heaven and escape Death to find
Going By The Book
There's a lot more I could say. I could explain each of the songs and even their positions on the albums and their numerical
relationship to each other. There are a certain number of words in all the titles of the songs on each album and to the words in
the titles of the albums themselves. Jesus began his public ministry when he was 30 and was crucified when he was 33. Each phase
of seven albums has 33 words in the titles of the series. Each seventh song has a certain subject matter which is recurring.
The songs about dreams and nightmares occur in their proper numerical positions.
The full length version of SO LONG AGO THE GARDEN has twelve songs on it and they are more revealing than any other album.
The division of songs has to do with the choice made between Barabbas and Jesus, and also the choice we must make daily
between good and evil, God and Satan, dying to self or selfishness.
I don't have a fixation for numbers but because I grew up with the awareness that God is very specific in his arrangement of the universe
and that numbers play a very important part in his Creation. I have always been aware of the order and arrangement of my own music and
artwork. It's much easier to plan an overall pattern for albums than for the Creation of the Universe. I could explain all of my ideas
to you, but if you're interested to begin with you can probably take the time to figure it out for yourself.
Patience and Humility
Everything means something in my albums, just like in real life. It's alright if you don't understand all the inner relationships
within my albums. They're not crucial to understanding the albums themselves. I've only put the meaning behind the meaning in my albums
because this density and revelation exists in life. Like studying science, suddenly flowers and little animals take on a new precision
and beauty. Most of us understand this kind of experience of rethinking what once appeared to be obvious. We discover it at school.
But too many of us have never allowed ourselves to read our Bible as carefully as some of the books we read in school as we prepare for
a big test. We take our spiritual nourishment too much for granted and because God is such a faithful provider we don't really work very
hard at preparing ourselves spiritually. And in life we are too quick to judge people instead of taking the time to understand them.
And when we contemplate the spiritual we too often jump upon only part of the concept, running off to practice it and use it when
we understand very little of what it really means. And we do damage to others because of our enthusiastic ignorance. The Bible call it
"zeal without wisdom." We judge people, tell them their theology is wrong, only to discover several years later that we ourselves have
misinterpreted that portion of scripture we felt we had real knowledge of. We rarely apologize to those we have hurt because our vanity
has blinded us to their injury.
We should learn to be slow to speak, yet quick to hear the Word of the Lord. We should, ourselves, ponder many mysteries in our hearts
and be slow to declare but quick to pray. Slow to accuse but quick to confess. Slow to lead but quick to serve.
We may be men and women but we are still small children. God is out Father and he can guide us to maturity and wisdom. But we have to
allow him to destroy us and rebuild us. Man's wisdom is worthless and will prove false and empty and shall pass away. But God's Wisdom
is perfect and eternal and by renewing our minds, and transforming our minds in Christ Jesus we shall have truer wisdom and shall
build instead of destroy, love instead of judge, pray instead of gossip, and uplift and promote unity instead of tear down and create
